Synopsis

Densetsu no Kyoshi (The Legendary Teacher) is a Japanese television drama series that aired on NTV every Saturday from April 15 to June 24, 2000, in the 21:00-21:54 time slot as part of the Saturday Drama programming block. It was a double-starring production featuring Hitoshi Matsumoto of Downtown and Masahiro Nakai of SMAP. The original concept was created by Matsumoto.

It is a so-called comedy school drama. It was Matsumoto's first full-fledged acting role, as he had previously maintained a stance of not appearing in dramas (except for guest appearances). The series also tackles serious themes such as bullying, views on life and death, sex, and juvenile delinquency.

The drama features completely improvised free talk segments throughout. While most of these are between Matsumoto and Nakai, there are also instances where the student actors initiate the comedic situations.

Comedian Osamu Wakai has stated that he decided to pursue a career in comedy after watching the eighth episode of this drama, which inspired him to reconsider his suicidal thoughts.

Daisuke Kazama is a typical salaryman teacher who lacks passion for teaching and only follows procedures, failing to achieve any results. His second-year class D becomes completely unruly, and the school decides to rectify the situation by demoting Kazama to assistant homeroom teacher and bringing in Jiro Nanba, the Legendary Teacher who has a history of turning around numerous chaotic schools and has moved between many institutions. However, Nanba turns out to be a completely unconventional and chaotic teacher.
