▪️Artwork Description
This work is presumed to be by Toshusai Sharaku (birth and death dates unknown), a copperplate engraver from the late Edo period. Sharaku was active as an actor print artist in Osaka, shaking up the Ukiyo-e world with his masterpiece Yakusha-e (Actor Prints), and is said to have skillfully utilized copperplate engraving.
Characteristics of Toshusai Sharaku:
In copperplate engraving, he primarily used the direct engraving method, allowing for free expression of lines.
His works are characterized by their depiction of light and shadow, with fine shading particularly rendered in the feathers of birds and parts of flowers.
Compared to other copperplate engravers of his time, he is said to have focused on more realistic depictions of natural movement.
This copperplate engraving is presumed to be evidence of Sharaku's departure from the mainstream Ukiyo-e world and his foray into the unique realm of copperplate engraving.
There are no particularly noticeable scratches, and the condition is good. As this is an old item, please be aware that there may be dirt and scuffs due to age and long-term storage.
